AUTO · 2025 TABLE
Why car insurance went up, by the company on the card
These are the ten largest private-passenger auto groups in the Insurance Information Institute’s 2025 table. Rank is premium written. It is not a claim about price or service.
Triple-I’s private-passenger auto table shows U.S. direct premiums written of $193.4 billion in 2024, up 11.7% from 2023. That is the whole market after the table’s stated basis. It is not the change on one driver’s renewal. [45]
ISO figures republished by Triple-I put the 2024 average bodily-injury liability claim at $28,278, up from $17,014 in 2015, and the average collision claim at $5,489. Claim size is one reason a book of auto business is repriced. It does not identify which factor moved on your declarations page. [45]
| Rank | Group | 2025 direct premium | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | State Farm | $69.2B | 18.7% |
| 2 | Progressive | $69.0B | 18.6% |
| 3 | GEICO | $42.9B | 11.6% |
| 4 | Allstate | $37.7B | 10.2% |
| 5 | USAA | $22.9B | 6.2% |
| 6 | Farmers | $13.2B | 3.6% |

| 8 | Travelers | $7.2B | 1.9% |
| 9 | Auto Club Exchange | $7.1B | 1.9% |
| 10 | American Family | $5.7B | 1.5% |
Premiums are Triple-I’s published thousands of dollars, shown here in billions. Before reinsurance. The Berkshire Hathaway row is the group figure drivers meet as GEICO. Auto Club Exchange is not every AAA club.
