NOTICE RULE
215 ILCS 5/143.17 and 215 ILCS 5/143.21.1
Section 143.17 says a company may not fail to renew a policy of the personal fire, extended-coverage, and related kinds defined in section 143.13 unless it mails the named insured at least 30 days’ advance notice, and keeps proof of mailing. The nonrenewal is not effective until at least 30 days after that mailing date. Section 143.21.1 adds a second rule after a fire and extended-coverage policy has been effective or renewed for five years: the company may nonrenew only for misrepresentation or fraud, a measurably increased risk, or 60 days’ notice under section 143.17. The department’s consumer page matches that split and says the notice has to give the factual reason, the appeal right, and that the Illinois FAIR Plan may be available. Do not quote 215 ILCS 5/143.17a for a typical homeowners policy. That section excepts the personal-lines definitions in section 143.13.
