Why did my Travelers home insurance go up in Illinois?

A Travelers renewal in Illinois is two documents: the company’s offer, and Illinois’s rule for how much warning a non-renewal must give. The clock we re-read is 30 days mailed, or 60 days after five years. The 2022 HO-3 average here was $1,343. That is not your premium.

ILLINOIS NOTICE

30 days mailed, or 60 days after five years

215 ILCS 5/143.17 and 215 ILCS 5/143.21.1

Section 143.17 says a company may not fail to renew a policy of the personal fire, extended-coverage, and related kinds defined in section 143.13 unless it mails the named insured at least 30 days’ advance notice, and keeps proof of mailing. The nonrenewal is not effective until at least 30 days after that mailing date. Section 143.21.1 adds a second rule after a fire and extended-coverage policy has been effective or renewed for five years: the company may nonrenew only for misrepresentation or fraud, a measurably increased risk, or 60 days’ notice under section 143.17. The department’s consumer page matches that split and says the notice has to give the factual reason, the appeal right, and that the Illinois FAIR Plan may be available. Do not quote 215 ILCS 5/143.17a for a typical homeowners policy. That section excepts the personal-lines definitions in section 143.13.

Illinois FAIR Plan. The Department of Insurance tells nonrenewed homeowners they may be eligible for the Illinois FAIR Plan. PIPSO counted 1,961 Illinois habitational policies in fiscal year 2024. What the plan covers still needs a look at the plan’s own materials. [22]

What to do this week

  1. Find three dates: the date the notice was mailed, the date the policy expires, and the date the company says coverage ends.
  2. Read the reason. “Underwriting reasons,” with nothing under it, is not an explanation you can appeal or fix.
  3. Decide which letter you have. A nonrenewal, a mid-term cancellation, and a renewal that cuts coverage or raises the price are different notices, and states time them differently.
  4. Keep paying the current policy until a new one is bound. A gap can put a mortgage into force-placed insurance, which protects the lender first.
  5. Ask the company, in writing, for the declarations page, the replacement-cost estimate, and which rating factors changed.
  6. If a mortgage company is on the policy, tell them you are replacing coverage before the old policy ends.
  7. Shop admitted insurers. If you cannot find one, use the residual-market note on your state page. A FAIR plan or Citizens policy is often narrower than the policy you had.
  8. Compare deductibles before you accept a lower premium. A percentage hurricane or wind deductible is a share of the dwelling limit, not a flat $1,000.
  9. If the notice looks late or states no real reason, complain to the state insurance department and keep the envelope or the electronic-delivery record.
  10. Ask about a mitigation credit only where the company will put the discount in writing: a new roof, opening protection, or defensible space, depending on the peril.

Questions people type

Why did my Travelers home insurance go up in Illinois?

Start with two different things: a Illinois rate change for Travelers, and a change in your own house (replacement cost, roof, claims, deductible, or coverage). The 2022 HO-3 average in Illinois was $1,343. It is not your premium and it is not a 2026 price. Any Travelers percentage confirmed for this state is in the filings section. If that section says needs verification, nobody on this page has read a Illinois order for this company. [22][26]

What is the non-renewal notice rule for Travelers in Illinois?

Travelers has to follow Illinois law, not a company timetable. 30 days mailed, or 60 days after five years. [42][43][18]

What should I do in 2026 if Travelers nonrenews me in Illinois?

Count the days on the notice against the Illinois rule on this page, ask Travelers in writing for the reason and the rating worksheet, and do not drop the current policy until replacement coverage is bound. If you cannot find an admitted policy, read the residual-market note for Illinois FAIR Plan. Complaints go to Illinois Department of Insurance. [27][22]
