Why did my Shelter home insurance go up in Louisiana?
A Shelter renewal in Louisiana is two documents: the company’s offer, and Louisiana’s rule for how much warning a non-renewal must give. The clock we re-read is 60 days since 1 july 2026, and the notice must state the cause. The 2022 HO-3 average here was $2,603. That is not your premium.
LOUISIANA NOTICE
60 days since 1 July 2026, and the notice must state the cause
La. R.S. 22:1335(A)
Act 182 of 2025 rewrote the homeowners nonrenewal clock. From 1 July 2026, an insurer may not fail to renew unless it mails or delivers written notice to the named insured at the policy address at least 60 days before expiration. The notice has to include the cause. If the notice is mailed with fewer than 60 days left, coverage stays in effect until 60 days after the notice is mailed or delivered. Before 1 July 2026 the statute’s clock was 30 days. A notice is not required if the insurer, or a company in the same group, has offered a renewal, or if the named insured has said in writing that they will not renew. Today’s reviews use the 60-day text.
Needs verificationNo Shelter rate order, exit, or moratorium specific to Louisiana was confirmed in this review. Search SERFF and the Louisiana Department of Insurance filing search. The absence of a row here is not an absence of a filing.
The Southeast had the highest 2024 average premium per policy of the four zones, at $1,818. Inflation-adjusted change since 2018: Inside the report’s inflation-adjusted range of 18.3% to 43.3%. The prose names the Northeast and the West as the endpoints, not a separate Southeast percentage..
Public rate filings are posted in SERFF Filing Access when a state participates. Search the company and the homeowners line. A filing is a request until the regulator acts on it. Unless a row above cites a regulator or company release, this review did not download that company’s SERFF PDF. [26]
If the admitted market will not take the house
Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation. Triple-I describes Louisiana Citizens as the state’s residual market, combining FAIR and beach plans. PIPSO counted 151,075 Louisiana habitational policies in fiscal year 2024. Confirm current eligibility on Citizens’ own site before you apply. [22]
Find three dates: the date the notice was mailed, the date the policy expires, and the date the company says coverage ends.
Read the reason. “Underwriting reasons,” with nothing under it, is not an explanation you can appeal or fix.
Decide which letter you have. A nonrenewal, a mid-term cancellation, and a renewal that cuts coverage or raises the price are different notices, and states time them differently.
Keep paying the current policy until a new one is bound. A gap can put a mortgage into force-placed insurance, which protects the lender first.
Ask the company, in writing, for the declarations page, the replacement-cost estimate, and which rating factors changed.
If a mortgage company is on the policy, tell them you are replacing coverage before the old policy ends.
Shop admitted insurers. If you cannot find one, use the residual-market note on your state page. A FAIR plan or Citizens policy is often narrower than the policy you had.
Compare deductibles before you accept a lower premium. A percentage hurricane or wind deductible is a share of the dwelling limit, not a flat $1,000.
If the notice looks late or states no real reason, complain to the state insurance department and keep the envelope or the electronic-delivery record.
Ask about a mitigation credit only where the company will put the discount in writing: a new roof, opening protection, or defensible space, depending on the peril.
Why did my Shelter home insurance go up in Louisiana?
Start with two different things: a Louisiana rate change for Shelter, and a change in your own house (replacement cost, roof, claims, deductible, or coverage). The 2022 HO-3 average in Louisiana was $2,603. It is not your premium and it is not a 2026 price. Any Shelter percentage confirmed for this state is in the filings section. If that section says needs verification, nobody on this page has read a Louisiana order for this company. [22][26]
What is the non-renewal notice rule for Shelter in Louisiana?

What should I do in 2026 if Shelter nonrenews me in Louisiana?
Count the days on the notice against the Louisiana rule on this page, ask Shelter in writing for the reason and the rating worksheet, and do not drop the current policy until replacement coverage is bound. If you cannot find an admitted policy, read the residual-market note for Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation. Complaints go to Louisiana Department of Insurance. [27][22]
