CAUSES
Why home insurance went up: the 2026 causes
A 2026 renewal is not a national percentage. The newest market study stops at 2024. What it shows is a multi-year rise in premium per policy, a sharp rise in company nonrenewals, and a rebuild cost that moved faster than a typical household budget.
The market moved before your letter arrived
In 2024, 715 homeowners companies with at least $50,000 of direct premium in a state had 103,289,334 policies in force and wrote $165.2 billion of direct premium, about $1,600 per policy. [19]
Adjusted for inflation, average premium per policy rose between 18.3% and 43.3% across NAIC zones from 2018 to 2024, which the NAIC describes as about 2.4% to 5.3% a year. The largest moves were in 2023 and 2024. A street, a ZIP code, or one company can sit far from the zone average. [19][20]
Insurers reported 2,019,799 company-initiated homeowners nonrenewals in 2024. The rate per 1,000 policies rose between 96% and 216% by zone from 2018 to 2024. A higher bill and a nonrenewal letter are different events. Both became more common in the same years. [19]
Replacement cost is the piece on your house
Triple-I said on 17 December 2025 that structural replacement costs had risen nearly 30% over the prior five years, and it forecast 11.8% growth in homeowners net written premium for 2025. That growth figure is a forecast, not a closed 2026 result, and it is not the change on one declarations page. [23]
If Coverage A was raised to match a new rebuild estimate, the premium can rise even when the rate per thousand did not. Ask for the estimate. Square footage, year built, and materials are the lines worth challenging when they are wrong. [23]
Wind, water, and fire are not equal shares of the loss
In ISO data for 2023, republished by Triple-I, wind and hail were 42.5% of homeowners incurred losses, water damage and freezing 22.6%, and fire and lightning 21.6%. About 5.3% of insured homes had a claim. Those tables exclude Alaska, Texas, and Puerto Rico, so they are not a Texas loss split. [22]
The latest state HO-3 averages republished by Triple-I are for 2022. The U.S. figure was $1,569, up 11.2% from 2021. It includes state funds, residual markets, and some wind pools. It is not a 2026 price, and the NAIC does not rank states. [22]
What a 2026 letter can still be
A confirmed company action belongs on that company’s page. The California State Farm settlement and the Florida Citizens decreases are examples. A news report of a filing is not an order. If this site has not linked a regulator or company document for your carrier and state, the percentage on a blog is not a fact here. [4][24][26]
Questions people type
Is there one reason home insurance went up in 2026?
No. The NAIC’s July 2026 study describes 2018–2024 zone increases, not a single 2026 national rate. Your offer can also move because the dwelling limit, roof, claims, deductible, or a state-approved filing changed. [19]
