How to lower your homeowners premium
A lower premium is a change in the rating factors or a different policy. This page does not promise a percent off. It lists the documents that show which lever actually moved.
Start with the worksheet, not a shopping slogan
Ask the company, in writing, for the declarations page, the replacement-cost estimate, and which rating factors changed from last year. A statewide filing and a change in your house are different causes. The worksheet is the page that separates them. [26][23]
Triple-I said structural replacement costs had risen nearly 30% over five years as of December 2025. If the new Coverage A limit is wrong — square footage, year built, or materials — correcting it is a real premium change. Guessing a rebuild number to force the price down can leave a coinsurance or underinsurance problem at a claim. [23]
A higher deductible is a trade, not a discount
Needs verificationRaising a flat deductible, or accepting a percentage wind or hurricane deductible, usually lowers the premium because you keep more of the loss. Read the declarations page for whether the wind or hurricane deductible is a flat dollar amount or a percentage of the dwelling limit, and turn that percentage into dollars before you treat the lower premium as savings. [27]
Mitigation credits have to be in writing
Wind and hail were 42.5% of homeowners incurred losses in the 2023 ISO tables Triple-I republished, and those tables exclude Texas and Alaska. A new roof, opening protection, or defensible space can matter to an underwriter in a wind, hail, or wildfire ZIP code. The credit, if any, is company-specific. Ask for it in writing on the offer. This site does not publish a universal percent off. [22]
Shop the admitted market before a residual plan
A FAIR plan, Citizens, or a wind pool is for people who cannot find coverage. It is often narrower than the policy being replaced. Read the residual-market note on your state page before you treat it as a bargain. Complaints about a renewal or a missing reason go to the state insurance department. [28][27]
Questions people type
Will bundling auto and home lower the homeowners premium by a set percent?
Needs verificationNot by any percent this site can cite. A package credit is a company rating rule. Ask for it on the quote, and compare the homeowners coverages line by line. A cheaper package that cuts roof or water coverage is a different policy. [26]
Can I lower the premium by dropping a claim from the record?
Needs verificationAbout 5.3% of insured homes had a claim in the 2023 ISO tables. How long one claim stays on a rating plan is company-specific. Needs verification on your worksheet. Do not assume a claim falls off on an anniversary you have not confirmed. [22]
